As a young Jewish boy on Friday night with my family I celebrated the blessings of the food on the Sabbath every Friday night. Then Sunday mornings were about spirituality rather than religion. In fact, the Sunday school I went to from the age of three was the junior form of Science of Mind, the same philosophy in which Louise Hay and others have their spiritual roots.

Finding myself in a spiritually aware household at three years old, my life was somewhat destined to take me on a path of self-development and spiritual growth. My father eventually became the leader of Science of Mind, Johannesburg, and our family home became its new office and centre. At the one end of the spectrum, the centre hosted classes in yoga, meditation and the spiritual laws of life. It facilitated courses by Dr Speedy Bentle, Dr Chris Barnard's anesthetist, on how our thoughts chemically create wellness or disease in the body. At the far end of the spectrum it arranged talks and workshops on attracting financial wealth and prosperity. My father invited numerous international speakers to South Africa, Including Og Mandino, author of the Greatest Salesman in the World.

The more modern, western based philosophies were saying that we are the masters of our lives, and the captains of our ships; that confidence and self-esteem are the keys to success; and that we are able to achieve goals beyond our wildest dreams. The eastern philosophies seemed to say that the only master and captain is God, that we have no right to say what is in our own best interests let alone for the higher good, that humility is the key, and that the road to Heaven is through "letting go and letting God". How could they both be right?

Over the last 16 years of studying Mayan Cosmology it has become clear that there is a way to integrate the wisdom and ideologies of the East and self-help philosophies of the West. That we are designed as co-creators, with the free will to choose whatever goal we want, and then to invite spirit to inspire, guide and direct the process of goal-achievement for the highest good of all. That way our goals become God's goals; and our projects become those of our Creator.
